The Velvetleaf

Depending on the species, the flowers can take on different shades: lavender blue, orange, pink, red, white, yellow, and sometimes two-tone. The foliage is semi-persistent. If you live in a region with a mild climate, you can plant it in the ground. Otherwise, it should be grown in pots and brought in when temperatures drop to -5 degrees C.

Plant it in sun-drained soil, but avoid the hottest hours in summer, as the shrub also likes half-shade. For maintenance, you should prune the velvetleaf in early spring. At this time, you should cut damaging branches and remove dead wood to give your shrub more air and water abundantly.

Heliconia

This beautiful flower can be grown at home as in a veranda. This plant, nicknamed “crab claw” or “parrot beak,” looks a little like birds of paradise. It comes from Central America, and you can find it on some Pacific islands. The flowers are elongated, colorful, and elegant. The leaves look like the banana tree. The size can reach between 1 and 5 meters.

Indoors, it blooms between February and November in the light and a humid environment. It prefers temperature around 18 degrees C. You can take it outside in the garden when the conditions are right. During the growing period, the heat should not fall below 15 degrees C. Though the flower likes the sun, it does not enjoy direct sunlight.

The plant produces bright, pink flowers and broad foliage, which is ornamental. It likes large pots to grow in. Use airy potting soil and especially put clay balls at the bottom of the container. Be careful not to expose it to direct sunlight. We don’t recommend placing it on the ground when you have heating under the floor. It can grow in a warm greenhouse in winter, but in that case, it needs moisture. The plant can reach up to a meter tall.

The Hibiscus

The hibiscus is also known as the Chinese Rose. Many varieties can be grown either in pots or in the garden. It blooms in the summer, and the flowers offer many various colors. The hibiscus appreciates light, warmth, and humidity. However, it does not like frost or cold. It can live two to three years in a pot in your apartment and 10 years in the ground.

The hibiscus can be exposed to direct sunlight but avoid placing it during the hottest times of the year. You should water it about every three days during the growth period, but be careful as the water should not stagnate at the bottom of the pot. Therefore, put a bed of clay balls to prevent this. The roots could rot. In the summer, you can spray it. In the spring, propagation by cuttings is also possible.

Plumeria

The plumeria is a beautiful plant that comes from Central America. You can enjoy the delicate scent of its bicolored flower. It blooms in the summer, and the flowering is abundant and prosperous. It is best grown indoors, where it looks fashionable. It requires little maintenance, except very regular watering. It likes humidity, and it thrives in well-drained soil. A light and airy potting soil and clay balls at the bottom of the pot, and that’s it!

Grown in a pot, it cannot reach higher than three meters. You can place the container on your terrace, in the garden or veranda without any problem. Bring it in as soon as the temperature drops below 5 degrees C. It looks best in south-facing rooms where the sun shines for a large part of the day. Do not hesitate to bring liquid fertilizer once a month during the growth period.

Madagascar Jasmine

Madagascar jasmine is a climbing plant that flowers between May and September. The herbs are plentiful and fragrant. If you like it at home, it can grow up to 6 meters in your garden and up to 2.50 meters when grown in a pot. It usually lives for about 10 years. It is also called wedding wreath, flowering rosary, or waxflower. It would help it grow if you expose it to full light.

The flower likes a humid atmosphere. However, you have to spray it abundantly several times a week as to fully flourish.

You also have to water it very regularly. During spring and summer, do not hesitate to add fertilizer. If you want the plant to bloom the following year, you must store it in a cool and dry place. If you wish to prune it, wait until February and for repotting, prefer April.

Guzmania

This plant, native to the forests of Central America, is natural to cultivate in our interiors. The flower is not suited for outdoor use at home. Additionally, it does not tolerate temperatures below 15 degrees C, and it prefers temps of 18 to 25 degrees C and needs a lot of light. It would be best if you protect it from direct sunlight in the hottest hours. Remember to place it near a window facing east or west. Avoid drafts and heating sources.

This flower requires about 70% humidity to feel good. You can put the pot on a clay bead cup and fill it with water. Spray it regularly. When the temperature is low, empty it, and then water the substrate only. Between April and June, apply fertilizer every two weeks. The flower remains beautiful for a very long time.
