“Why should we celebrate International Women’s Day?” I hear you ask. Well, it’s a day for you to recognise all those wonderfulwomen in your life, what they achieve and all that they do for you. The first officially celebrated International Women’s Day was in 1911 in 17 countries, as women protested for improved rights, pay and working conditions. It also gave impetuous to movements such as the suffragettes in the United Kingdom, which eventually secured the vote for women in 1918. Sylvia Pankhurst, a prominent member of the campaign, was in fact arrested in London whilst trying to give a speech on Women’s Day in 1913. Whilst women still don’t have complete equality, campaigns such as International Women’s Day have really played a part in levelling the playing field in our society.
Considering its history, we feel that the spirit of Women’s Day is to celebrate what women have achieved together and spend the day enjoying the best of what life has to offer.
